Thunderstorms, small tornadoes to lash NZ

MetService issues severe weather warning for North Island as cold front moves in

What's the weather gonna be like today?

A severe weather warning has been issued for the North Island as a cold front moves in, bringing with it thunderstorms, heavy rain, and possible small tornadoes.

The MetService has issued the warning for Northland, Auckland, Waikato, Taranaki, Waitomo, Taumarunui, Taupo, and Gisborne.

The front is expected to hit the North Island this afternoon and evening, bringing with it heavy rain, thunderstorms, and possible small tornadoes.

The MetService is warning people to be prepared for severe weather, including:

  • Heavy rain, which could cause flooding and slips
  • Thunderstorms, which could bring hail and lightning
  • Small tornadoes, which are most likely to occur in the Waikato and Taranaki regions

People are advised to stay indoors if possible and to avoid driving if they can.

If you are caught in a thunderstorm, seek shelter in a sturdy building or vehicle.

If you see a tornado, take cover immediately in a low-lying area.

The MetService will continue to monitor the situation and will issue updates as needed.
